One of several Porini camps which follow the same model of small, comfortable tented camps at the lower end of the price spectrum. Walk with Maasai guides. Day trips into Maasai Mara NP.
Reserve: Mara Conservancies
Serian Original
As the name suggest, this is Alex Walker’s first camp, with large tents along the side of the hill looking over the Mara River towards the escarpment. The design is more traditional, it’s unpretentious and family-friendly. Sightings are good, you get a private vehicle, and because you’re in the conservancy, walking and night drives are allowed. Book ahead to request The Nest for an exciting night in a treehouse.
Richards Forest/River
In a quiet area of the Mara, with quietly elegant decor – unfussy, nicely casual – roll up the flaps for views of the plain all around. Like me, they like walking. High-end food. Solar powered.
Porini Mara
Small, simple camp run together with the local community; exclusive use of its conservancy, emphasis on eco-friendliness.
Porini Lion
Down to earth, community and eco-conscious camp. Guided walks with Maasai warriors.
Ol Seki Hemingways
Big verandas with bigger views, innovative tented design, family suites, on an exclusive conservancy
Ngare Serian
Access Serian’s flagship camp is just metres from the Mara River (access is via a footbridge). The tents strike a perfect balance between romantic old safari style and comfort, they’ve been thoughtfully designed, spacious but cosy at night. It’s over the river from Serian Original, but completely private. Stay at least 3 nights so you can spend one in the treehouse, a fun adventure.
Mara Plains
Gorgeous camp founded by photographers Dereck & Beverley Joubert on a private conservancy away from the crowds. Vast tented suites are very lux but understated.
Mara Bush Houses
Exclusive-use bush homes with en-suite bedrooms & pools, homely family feel. Topi is much closer to the migration than Mara & Acacia.
&Beyond Klein’s
Elevated position gives wonderful views; old school camp – deep couches in charming thatched cottages. Kids programme. Visits to local community.
